The making of Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology was the coming together of four health institutions by signing into law a bill passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology, by Dr. Peter Odili, the Executive Governor of Rivers State.
School of Health Technology
School of Health Technology was established in 1974 to train low and middle level manpower for the health sector, as unit under the Rivers State Ministry of Health and was headed by a Principal. The school which started with the training of Public Health Inspectors had over the years expanded in programme content and scope and is offering courses in:
  • Environmental Health Technology
  • Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW)/Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW)
  • Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • Pharmacy Technician
  • Health Information Management
  • Dental Surgery Technician.
These courses were introduced so as to produce the needed manpower to service the nations Basic Health Services Scheme that later metamorphosed into primary Health Care. In 2001 the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) had granted provisional accreditation to the School of Health Technology to run the Higher National Diploma (HND) Programme in Environmental Health Technology. Thus, apart from the Environmental Health Technology Programme, all other courses were run at the certificate level.

School of Public Health Nursing
The School of Public Health Nursing was established in 1979 to offer courses in Public Health Nursing and Community Health Officers programmes. The School was also a unit under the Rivers State Ministry of Health and headed by a Principal. The School was also granted provisional accreditation by NBTE to run HND Programme in Public Health Nursing. Since the candidates for this programme were mostly qualified Registered Nurses and / or Midwifes, the programme is exclusively HND. The school also runs an abridgement course for Public Health Nursing Officers previously trained and now wishing to update to the new HND programme. The West African Health Examination Board (WAHEB) regulates this programme
School of Nursing
The School of Nursing was established in 1970 to train professionally qualified Registered Nurses. The School was also a unit under the Rivers State Ministry of Health and headed by a Principal. The Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria regulate the training of Nurses. The Registered Nurses were mainly middle level manpower to serve the needs of our secondary health care institutions. The Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria had work with NBTE to developed and come up with HND programme in Nursing.
School Of Midwifery
The School Of Midwifery was also established in 1970 to train professionally qualified Midwives registrable with the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria. The School was also a unit under the Rivers State Ministry of Health and headed by a Principal. At inception the school was training middle level manpower in Basic Midwifery for direct entry candidates, and Post Basic Midwifery, for already qualified Registered Nurses.
Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology
On the 17th of August 2001, the executive Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili signed into law a bill passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly for the establishment of the Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology. The enabling law thus brings under one administrative umbrella the long existing Schools of Health Technology, Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing. This development is in keeping pace with the requirements for the training of 21st century health professional. This is also the first of its kind in the nations.
The College operates from three campuses, the Health Technology campus adjacent to the schools of Nursing/Public Health Nursing Campus, both situated at kilometer 6 (Mile 4) Rumueme, along Ikwerre Road and the school of Midwifery campus is situated at Emekuku Street D/Line, Port Harcourt. The School of Health Technology campus and houses the Principal Officers of the College, Provost, Deputy Provost, Registrar and Bursar.
Under the new structure, each of them now runs as a School with a Director as the Head of School. The College now has 10 Schools:
The Health Technology (main) campus now has 8 (eight) schools namely:

i) School of Environmental Health Technology

ii) School of Community Health

iii) School of Pharmaceutical Studies

iv) School of Dental technology

v) School of Health Information Management

vi) School of Medical Laboratory Sciences

vii) School of Imaging Science and Technology

viii) School of General and Remedial studies

The Nursing campus has

x) The school of Public Health Nursing

The Midwifery campus, runs

The Rivers State College of Health Science & Technology seeks to be recognized as a first-rate, health and intensive research institution that will leads our state and nation in demonstrating a commitment to the development of skill manpower for our medical/health sector.

The consensus for change as stated by the Ag. Provost Dr. Nanna Onyekwerre’s address to the staff state that the College would pursue new line of directions to live up to expectation of the new confidence re-in posed on her by the government. To attain this new vision. It would:

Þ Provide outstanding education in all academic programs of the college and selected professionals areas;

Þ Produce research, scholarship and creative work that is recognized internationally, nationally and locally;

Þ Provide an equitable environment focused on learning;

Þ Enhance a strong tradition of community and professional service

Mission: To create, preserve and communicate knowledge in health science and technology, and thereby, contribute to the complete enhancement of the health and well being of the people of Rivers State, Nigeria and the world.

Vision: To be one of Nigeria's outstanding Colleges in health science and technology, respected for our knowledge of the world, for our understanding of the complexities of our province in its cultural, socioeconomic and scientific dimensions, and for advancing and disseminating knowledge in our domains, but especially in those that contribute to the health and well being of the citizen of Nigeria.
